Extended Hours for UK Pubs

A recent announcement by the United Kingdom Home Office has revealed a proposal to allow licensed premises to open later for the Euro 2024 Cup tournament, with extensions granted for the semi-final and final dates. However, the extension would online be granted should the home nations reach that stage of the tournament.

Although not scheduled until mid-July 2024, the event will coincide with the European summer, the busiest season for the local hospitality industry. The proposal would allow licensed bars and pubs to remain open until 01:00 am.

Chief executive of UKHospitality, Kate Nicholls, said that the Euro 2024 Cup tournament is set to be a huge event for hospitality businesses next summer, with thousands of fans expected to pack bars and pubs around the country.

“We support the Home Office proposals to extend licensing hours for the semi-finals and final, should we reach that stage of the tournament. Major sporting events provide a huge revenue boost, and extended hours are essential to allow venues and fans to take full advantage."

Nicholls added that this announcement and advanced planning proposal has been the exact type of approach UKHospitality has advocated for in its engagement for many years.

"I’m pleased the Home Office is consulting well in advance, acting on our calls on behalf of the sector," said Nicholls.

Consultation on the matter is expected to run until mid-February 2024.

This proposal has followed a recent announcement that the National Living Wage rate will rise in April 2024. Throughout 2023, UKHospitality has negotiated with the government to highlight the damage the increase may have on the sector.

"We’re acutely aware of the pressure this will put on sector businesses, with labour costs making up a substantial proportion of turnover," said Nicholls.
