From latte art to starting his own coffee bean brand, to say Eric Goh is passionate about good coffee is an understatement.

Born and raised in Sarawak, Malaysia, Goh worked as a barista for four years, learning the intricacies of a good cup of coffee. Learning how to make espresso led him to hand-brewing filter coffee and eventually to roasting his own beans.

After deciding to move to New Zealand on a working holiday, Goh honed in on his passion and started his coffee ban brand using a one-kilogram coffee roaster.

He based himself in Christchurch and got a job at C1 Espresso as a roaster, hoping to make lasting friendships while practising his skill.

"The aroma of the coffee beans and the cracking sound of coffee beans make me happy," Goh explained.

"Seeing customers buy coffee beans that I roast is an achievement. Hearing them tell me that the coffee is delicious makes me continue to do my best."

A great roast is vital to bringing out the characteristics of the coffee beans. Goh emphasised how unique each bean is and how roasting is the only way to show customers the depth of its flavours.

Goh hopes to travel to Japan in the near future due to how the culture embraces the spirit of shokunin, the spirit of artisans.

"Artisans dedicated themselves to a lifelong apprenticeship," said Goh.

"Their craft is not merely a job, but a path of continuous improvement. I admire the dedication and effort that goes into perfecting their craft."

C1 Espresso greatly impacted Goh's professional and personal life, helping him find a space to transform his skills. He thanked C1 owners Nick and Dale Annear for their support and the expertise they have taught him.

He also stressed the importance of getting unconditional support from family and friends. With their continued enthusiasm, Goh strives to become the best roaster he can be.

“It’s not easy  to do what you want but just do it with determination and passion, you will reach the place where you want to be.”
