First Ever Pay-as-You-Feel Burger

The 'Rescued Burger'

Everybody Eats is introducing a burger at Wellington On A Plate’s Burger Welly festival that will cost as much or as little as you like. You can get your hands on it by ordering online via the Everybody Eats website, or by bidding on it on Trade Me. If it sells for $10,000, it will make it the world’s most expensive burger.

Payment for the ‘Rescued Burger’, which features a sustainably sourced tahr pattie, American cheddar cheese, ‘rescued’ butter pickles and housemade BBQ sauce, will be based on the same contribution model that Everybody Eats operates on, where you pay what you can afford for your burger, even if that’s nothing.

Everybody Eats founder, Nick Loosley, said the idea behind the pay-as-you-feel burger was a no-brainer.

“We get a great turnout at our restaurant in Wellington serving almost 600 people a week, so the demand is obviously there. To take part in the festival and ensure that anyone can get involved is super exciting. Some of our regulars experience homelessness, so to be able to give them a delicious burger as part of a festival that they would otherwise be excluded from is humbling. We can give some of these burgers for free because of those giving generously to pay for their own, and there’s something really special about that.”

While Everybody Eats helps to address food poverty, it is also looking to address two other key societal issues in New Zealand, food waste and social isolation.

“Every year about 157,000 tonnes of food go straight to landfill. Since we started, we’ve helped to divert over 56 tonnes of it from landfill and transformed it into over 75,000 meals for hungry Kiwis.”

Loosely adds “Everybody Eats isn’t a soup kitchen; we provide our diners with three-course meals, served at shared tables to encourage interaction between diners and with our volunteers.”

Trade Me spokesperson Millie Silvester said they loved seeing Everybody Eats use the Trade Me Platform in such a creative way. “The team at Everybody Eats do incredible work and we are excited to help them reach the 670,000 Kiwis that visit our site every day.”

The Rescued Burger is extremely limited and likely to sell out. It will be available as part of Burger Welly on Tuesday 17th, 24th and 31st August. Orders are takeaway only and can be ordered at
