A string of burglaries in Wigram, Christchurch, has included a restaurant, as authorities continue searching for perpetrators.
Christchurch police are investigating a group of burglaries across the Christchurch suburb of Wigram, after six businesses were broken into in just 90 minutes. The following day, a restaurant was attacked in the early hours of the morning. In total, seven businesses have been targeted by thieves.
The restaurant has not yet been identified; however Police said that CCTV footage would help to reveal the perpetrators.
Senior Sergeant Stephen McDaniel said Police believe the events may be linked.
“We are following every line of enquiry available to us to locate the people we believe are responsible,” said Sen. Sgt. McDaniel.
“Part of those enquiries are establishing what has been taken, but the value of what has been stolen will not come close to the damage that’s been caused to hard-working businesses.”
Senior Sergeant McDaniel added that two stolen vehicles were involved in the first three break-ins, which took place on Ensign Street, about 5.40 am. One of the cars was abandoned after being used to gain entry to a Wigram liquor store a short time later.
“A suspect vehicle was spotted on QEII Drive following another burglary on Hawke Street about 6.40 am, but due to the dangerous driving behaviour, it was not pursued.”
The vehicle was found abandoned on Dunbarton Street, Redwood, about 7.10 am, nearby to where another vehicle was stolen.
Sen. Sgt. McDaniel told local residents that the investigation was under control.
“We want to assure the community that every lead is being followed to locate the offenders and prevent them from causing further harm.”
