The McRib is Back

McDonald’s has announced the McRib will return to New Zealand restaurants once again, for a limited time.

A global favourite and a fan obsession, the McRib has earned cult status for good reason. Made with a tender, juicy pork patty, smothered in tangy BBQ sauce, topped with pickles and onions, and served in a soft, homestyle bun. It’s big on flavour, bold in personality, and unapologetically saucy.

This is the first time New Zealand customers have been able to order the McRib since 2019.

The announcement has been made after several customers started speculating about its potential return following its listing on self-service kiosks as “sold out”.

One customer took to social media to express his confusion, asking if it was just a glitch, or should the McRib lovers be getting excited.

McDonald’s said this was an opportunity to satisfy the cravings of longtime fans and newcomers alike.

Around the world, the McRib has long been discussed as one of the most legendary and missed items to have been removed from the McDonald’s menu.

First introduced in the early 1980s, the burger was discontinued by the fast food giant in 2005. Its cult following and demand have seen it return on a number of instances, such as in the United States as recently as last year.

In 2012, to celebrate the London Summer Olympics, McDonald’s introduced the “Atlanta Pork McRib”, an homage to a former host city.

New Zealand has become the most recent market to reintroduce the McRib, albeit for a limited time only. The burger has seen successful comebacks, notably limited-time runs in Canada and Great Britain. In Germany and Luxembourg, the McRib is still available year-round.

“Whether you’ve been waiting years or just curious about the hype, now’s your chance to try a bite of Macca’s history,” McDonald’s said in a statement.

The McRib is available now and at participating McDonald’s restaurants nationwide, while stocks last.
