AUSTRALIA | Taylors has scooped up a number of prestigeous wins at the VINUS International Wines & Spirits Competition in Argentina.

Clare Valley family winery Taylors has raised a glass after one of its shiraz wines was crowned the Champion Red Wine Trophy at the VINUS International Wines & Spirits Competition, announced over the weekend.

The trophy was awarded to the family’s AUD $35 Jaraman Shiraz 2022, which also scored a near-perfect 99-point rating at the esteemed global wine competition.

A jury of recognised international wine experts, sommeliers, and journalists rated the South Australian Shiraz highly against more than 560 entries from 19 different countries at South America’s most important wine competition held in Argentina.

In addition to the Champion Red Wine Trophy, Taylors was recognised as the top exhibitor at the competition, winning the recognition for the ‘Best Series of Five Wines’. Four of Taylors wines landed in the top 10 of the competition, more than any other producer in the show.

This is the third consecutive year Taylors has received a top honour at the international competition. Last year, it won the International Champion trophy for its Heritage Label Shiraz 2022 (with a perfect 100-point rating) and for its Estate Shiraz 2020 at the 2022 competition.

“We are truly honoured to again be acknowledged with a top accolade at VINUS for the third year in a row. I’m not often lost for words, but this achievement fills me with immense pride in the entire Taylors team,” said Taylors Wines third-generation Winemaker and Managing Director Mitchell Taylor.

“The Jaraman wines are an ode to the incredible terroir of our famed winemaking regions across Australia and we feel so proud to have our backyard acknowledged once again on the world stage for premium wine.”

Taylors Wines took home a total of 11 Double Gold Medals at the competition for wines rated 95 points and above and four Gold Medals for wines rated between 90-94.99 points. Another Clare Valley winery, Kirrihil, also collected a Gold Medal for its Kirrihill 2021 Partner Series Clare Valley Shiraz 2021.

“It’s wonderful to see that our neighbours at Kirrihil secured a gold medal at this prestigious show. It proves that not only can Clare Valley be known around the world for crafting exceptional rieslings, but is also an outstanding region for producing world-class red wines,” Taylor said.

The award is a welcome one, according to Taylor, whose winery is now finally able to send its wines back into the China market following almost four years of tariffs, which were imposed at a rate of up to 212 percent on Australian wine back in 2020. Following the easing of tariffs, Australian wine exports are showing signs of recovery, with Wine Australia’s annual Export Report showing exports increasing in value by 17 percent to AUD $2.2 billion, with AUD $400 million of that going to Mainland China.

Taylors Jaraman Shiraz 2022 teams elegant Clare Valley fruit with spicy McLaren Vale fruit to craft a wine that expresses the stellar diversity of South Australia’s wine regions.

The shiraz was aged for 12-15 months in a selection of old and new American oak hogsheads to develop a wine of great balance with well-integrated oak tannins. Drinkers can expect aromas of ripe berries and plums with hints of vanilla. On the palate, bright red fruit characters intertwine with notes of coffee and clove to present a wine of complexity with impressive length.

The results from the VINUS International Wine & Spirits Competition join Taylors Wines’ recent string of accolades, including the trophy for Best Vintage Section Shiraz at the Clare Valley Wine Show for its 2023 Heritage Shiraz. At the Mundus Vini Summer Tasting, held in Germany, Taylors was awarded Best Producer Australia, securing nine gold medals across its portfolio.
