UK | Pineapple on pizza has once again ignited controversy among the British public, with one restaurant taking it to a new level.
The debate of whether pineapple belongs on pizza has risen to new heights, following a UK restaurant pricing its Hawaiian pizza for over NZD $200.
Lupa Pizza, a local pizzeria in Norwich, decided to implement its £100 pricetag in an attempt to stop customers from ordering it. Co-owner Francis Woolf has also made his feelings towards Hawaiian pizza known loud and clear.
“I absolutely loathe pineapple on pizza,” he said.
“We vehemently dislike pineapple on pizza. We feel like it doesn’t suit pizza at all.”
Lupa Pizza’s description for its Hawaiian Pizza on food delivery app Deliveroo stated that for USD $125 customers can have it.
“Order the champagne too! Go on you monster!”
Fellow co-owner Quinn Jianoran said that the restaurant did keep a tin of pineapple on hand in the kitchen just in case a customer decided to order it, which is yet to happen.
The debate has become a contentious issue in the United Kingdom, as demonstrated by a 2024 YouGov poll which showed that over 50 percent of the British Public either liked or loved pineapple on pizza, while 16 percent disliked it and nearly 20 percent hated the idea of it.
Lupa Pizza’s Facebook page has been swarmed by passionate pizza lovers both for and against pineapple as a pizza topping.
“I’m a native Hawaiian and live in Hawaii, and you are absolutely correct, no pineapple on pizza!” one Facebook user said.
“Don’t get me wrong, pineapple is great just not on pizza.”
Others were more supportive of the cause, arguing that charging £100 for a pizza was arrogant.
“Anyone telling others what they should or should not like to eat is not only ridiculous, it shows a basic lack of understanding of food, and its a prejudice,” another passionately commented.
Former UK Politician Ed Balls also commented on the debate, arguing that Hawaiian pizza was an “appalling” idea.
