Having been an iconic establishment along the Mission Bay Promenade for over 20 years, De Fontein has announced it will shut its doors.
De Fontein, the Belgian beer cafe, said via a statement on its website that its last day of trading will be Thursday, the 16th of April.
Customers have been encouraged to stop in for a visit for one last time and “grab their favourites, and make the most of it while they can” before De Fontein closes its doors for good.
De Fontein is known for its bold pink exterior and balcony dining area, and has been a staple among local businesses since it opened in 2004.
Owners of De Fontein said that it was with heavy hearts that they made the decision to close.
“Our lease has come to an end, and our last days trade will be April 16, 2026. Thank you to our loyal customers, wonderful suppliers & especially the many incredible team members from over the years. Your support has meant the world! Come and see us one last time for delicious mussels or a pint of fine Belgian beer.”
The business previously survived proposed plans to demolish the building back in 2021, when plans for a retail and apartment complex threatened to tear down the building.
Members of the local community took to Facebook to voice their disappointment with the closure.
“One of our favourite places for lunch on the deck on a gorgeous, sunny day! A pot of mussels, a Leffe Blonde beer, and the sea sparkling just across the bay! We will miss it,” one neighbour said.
“Steak and chips there are fantastic, and their staff are top notch. It will be missed,” said another.
The official Mission Bay Facebook page also said this was the end of an era.
“They have been part of so many of our routines, mussels with mates, a cold beer on the deck, those easy evenings by the beach.”
There has been no announcement as yet on what will fill the building once it is vacated.
