Happy Hour | Mint Julep

The mint julep is a mixed alcoholic cocktail, that consists of bourbon, sugar, water, crushed or shaved ice, and fresh mint.

Due to the bourbon base, it is associated with the American South and the cuisine of the Southern United States.

The first time that a mint julep was mentioned in print was in 1803, meaning that it has been around for over 200 years. The first acknowledged creator was Jasper Crouch, who came from Richmond, Virginia. Crouch was a chef and bartender at one of the city’s prestigious clubs, the Richmond Light Infantry Blues Club, as well as the Quoit Club.

The mint julep is the official drink of the Kentucky Derby, and has been since 1983. Every year at the event, around 10,000 bottles of bourbon, 60,000 tons of ice, and 1000 pounds of fresh mint are stocked in order to cater to the high demand from patrons.

With the annual Kentucky Derby around the corner in early May, serving a mint julep for the occasion is an excellent way to enhance the experience of guests, as well as fitting the theme.

For a more modern take on the cocktail, serve it with a fruity flavouring or garnish, or for those who still want to be part of the fun, consider serving a non-alcoholic alternative as well using ginger ale.
