COMBATING HUNGER

Subway has announced plans to combat world hunger in collaboration with World Sandwich Day. November 1st will see a partnership with KiwiHarvest battling the shocking food insecurity statistics we face as a nation. Around 40 percent of New Zealanders feel the sting of food insecurity, with one in five children living in households without sufficient food.

“Purchase a sub, salad or wrap on World Sandwich Day, receive another one for free and Subway will donate the cost of a meal to support KiwiHarvest in feeding the hungry in our communities,” said Chris Churchmichael, Subway New Zealand country director.

“This day began as a great way to celebrate the humble sandwich, but is now a way that we can make a big difference in our community, and we’re urging New Zealanders everywhere to get on board.”

Subway restaurants across the country are getting involved, with a national goal of donating more than 100,000 meals to KiwiHarvest.

“Since 2012, KiwiHarvest has rescued over 3.1 million kilograms of good nutritious food—the equivalent of 8.8 million meals,” said Gavin Findlay, KiwiHarvest CEO. “The food is distributed free of charge to more than 280 community groups and social service agencies to support New Zealanders in need.”

“KiwiHarvest is empowered by community partnerships. The generosity of Subway and its entire team across the country, as well as everyone who participates in World Sandwich Day,  allows us to rescue and distribute more food to support Kiwis in need across the country.”
