What is your company background, how did you start the business?
“The idea for Bonnie Oat Crackers came in 2010 during a two-year stint living in the sunny Scottish suburb of Leith, on the north side of Edinburgh. Like single malt whisky and shortbread, the Scots are also famous for their national cracker, the excellent oatcake. Returning home and unsuccessfully finding a ready supply of them in New Zealand, the idea for Bonnie was born.
We began by selling Bonnie Oatcakes beside the cheesemonger at the La Cigale French Market in Auckland. Today we’re stocked in over 130 stores around the country.”

What are the current product range and variants and how do these products stand out in the market?
“Bonnie Oatcakes come in four flavours; Original, Smoked Paprika, Canterbury Linseed and Kāmahi Honey. They are wheat-free, dairy-free and have no refined sugars. Many mainstream cracker brands add butter and sugar, but we’re making it the traditional way as we want it to compliment not overpower the beautiful cheeses that we have on offer here in New Zealand.
Sourcing locally is really important to us. We use the best homegrown ingredients wherever possible, including oats from Otago, organic Marlborough sea salt, linseed straight off the family farm in South Canterbury. For our newest flavour, we’re using native Kāmahi honey from J.Friend & Co’s beekeeper Derek who harvests it from coastal rainforests on the South Island’s West Coast.”

Has there been any recent company news?
“We have just created a new flavour for a Kapiti cheese campaign (commencing July). For this flavour we collaborated with NZ brand Thomsons Whisky to combine two of Scotland’s national treasures and produce a Single Malt Whisky Oatcake. This is just a limited-edition run, so keep an eye on their website for the full details.”

What are the plans for the business moving forward, is there any expansion on the horizon?
“We would love to take our Aoteroa oatcakes across the ditch to our cheese-loving friends in Australia. We see a big demand for premium NZ products over there and think that Bonnie fit in perfectly with their artisan scene.”

Kamahi-BoardWhere are your products currently available to buy, and are you looking at or wanting to expand your availability? If so, where would you like to see the product situated?
“Bonnie Oatcakes can be found at Farro, Nosh, Moore Wilsons, specialty delis and cheesemongers across the country and of course in selected New World supermarkets. We have just signed up with a merchandise company who will be presenting Bonnie to new stockists over the coming months. We hope to be stocked in every New World store that has a good cheese selection!”
