Cecilia Giménez, an 81-year-old parishioner from the small town of Borja in Spain, became a worldwide sensation after her attempts at ‘restoring’ a fresco on the wall of her local church were less than successful. Now, her efforts have inspired a wine produced by Campo de Borja-based producer Bodegas Aragonesas.
“I look at the painting and think it’s ok, you’re not that ugly. I hold it so dear, to the point that I see him as handsome,” Giménez said, after getting over the initial humiliation. The fresco has turned into a significant money-making venture for the region, attracting over 160,000 tourists.
The wine, named ‘Ecce Homo’ after the original fresco, is priced at 4 Euro per bottle and is made from a blend of Gernacha, Tempranillo, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. It is reportedly “harmonious and elegant” with cherry and chocolate aromas.
