Police are investigating an armed robbery at a popular West Auckland restaurant, leaving one worker hospitalised.

Detective Senior Sergeant Simon Harrison said four masked offenders arrived at the premises, on Great North Road in Glen Eden, around 10.25 pm on Wednesday night, allegedly armed with hammers and bats.

The worker, who attempted to engage with the offenders, was assaulted and sustained moderate injuries.

Harrison said that an undisclosed sum of money was missing from the restaurant, and that police had reason to believe some customers may have pocketed money that had dropped in the carpark outside.

A spokesperson from Hato Hone St John said one ambulance and one rapid response unit attended the scene, and the patient was promptly transferred to Auckland City Hospital.

Police have asked for anyone who is aware of information surrounding these events, and can assist them with their investigation, to contact the police online at 105.police.govt.nz or call 105.

Police recently arrested a man in early October for an armed robbery attempt in Hamilton. What many labelled the Father’s Day attack occurred at Smith & McKenzie Steak House restaurant in Chartwell. Two heavily disguised offenders went inside the restaurant, presented a firearm at the staff and stole a small amount of money. They all fled the scene.

Detective Sergeant Matthew Lee said a search warrant was conducted in Enderley with the assistance of the Armed Offenders Squad.

“A 41-year-old man, a gang associate, was arrested. We also located ammunition, drugs, multiple stolen vehicles and stolen property,” he said.

“Also, two women were arrested after walking out with children. We found cash and a large quantity of methamphetamine in a handbag concealed under a young child’s blanket.”

The man, aged 41, appeared in Hamilton District Court on October 10th, charged with aggravated robbery, taking a motor vehicle and unlawful possession of ammunition. He was remanded in custody to reappear on 31 October.
