KFC Heads Underground

KFC is set to open its first underground pop-up shop in Australia, repurposing an abandoned tunnel at Sydney's Wynyard Train Station.

KFC Australia has announced it will open its first underground restaurant, set to coincide with the launch of the last season of Netflix programme Stranger Things. The QSR chain has also launched a new burger, the Upside Down Double, set to be available from early December.

Located in an abandoned tunnel at Wynyard Station in Sydney, the underground restaurant will be designed to replicate an American diner from the 1980s. The underground restaurant will be called Hawkins Fried Chicken, resembling various elements from the series, including a Stranger Things tunnel at the front entrance, a menu made up nostalgic classics that will take any customer directly back to the 1980s, and retro arcade games and a jukebox playing timeless 1980s classics to complete the vibe.

“This unique creation innovates with KFC’s iconic flavours, perfectly reflecting our partnership with Stranger Things alongside our joy in bringing fans unforgettable taste experiences,” said Vanessa Rowed, CMO at KFC Australia.

This announcement has followed customer confusion upon finding the iconic giant bucket at one Sydney restaurant upside down. Speculation from customers online raised questions as to why it had been flipped.

“Has anyone seen this? Surely a mistake?” one Facebook user said.

“Does it normally look like this?” asked another.”

“I noticed it yesterday and thought, ‘gee, has it always been like that?’ Good to know I’m not too crazy.”

The new Upside Down Double has been described as so uniquely delicious, it could only come from another dimension.

The burger features two of KFC’s iconic Original Crispy fillets, sandwiching a soft bun in the middle, layered with crispy bacon, cheese, and a generous serving of KFC’s brand-new, Stranger Sauce.

“We’re absolutely thrilled to unite the passionate KFC and Stranger Things fandoms, not only through our immersive Hawkins Fried Chicken experience, but also by bringing the deliciously strange Upside Down Double to restaurants nationwide,” added Rowed.
