Would you like bacon with that?

McDonald’s has announced a bacon happy hour, with extra bacon slices being given away from free between 4 and 5pm at restaurants in Chicago on January 29.

“Bacon with an order of Hotcakes? Go for it. Bacon with a Hot Fudge Sundae? Have at it. Bacon with a Filet-O-Fish? Sure!” the company said in a statement.

For no additional cost, McDonald’s customers will receive two pieces of Applewood smoked bacon with any order that they choose.

“America loves bacon,” said Michael Haracz, McDonald’s manager of culinary innovation. “I really can’t wait to see the crazy and daring combinations our customers put together.”

The free-bacon hour is the curtain raiser to a whole new range of bacon-themed meals, including the Big Mac Bacon, the Quarter Pounder Cheese with bacon and a new menu item, Cheesy Bacon Fries.

“They have looked to Taco Bell for these techniques,” said Tim Powell, an analyst at Q1 Consulting. “McDonald’s has been more obvious with its ‘me too’ strategy with the never-frozen burger and all-day breakfast. We will see how franchisees handle this though.”
