Top Tipple: Cosmopolitan

Every cocktail is different in its own right because of the characteristics it may have. The cosmopolitan is no exception, with fans of the drink around the world loving the sweet and sour sensation.

Cosmopolitans, or cosmos as they are commonly known, is a blissful combination of vodka, cranberry juice, triple sec, and freshly squeezed lime juice. Every bartender makes it differently, some serve in a martini glass, and some garnish with a slice of lime. Lemon has also been occasionally used as an alternative to lime.

The sharp bite of a cosmopolitan is due to the citrus element, and has even been known to be served with citrus-based vodka occasionally.

Cosmopolitans are traditionally mixed with ice, but served without. The vibrant pink colour is immediately effective, and the froth on top is part of the charm.

Although unclear when the exact origin of the drink was, it is widely suspected that during the 1970s a bartender in Minneapolis invented it, and rose in popularity during the 1980s. Since then the cocktail has become a pop-culture icon of New York, and featured regularly on the series “Sex and the City”.

Its name derives from the Greek word kosmopolitēs, which means “citizen of the world,” which is fitting due to the worldwide admiration of it.
