The World’s Best Chardonnay

The Ihumatao Vineyard

Villa Maria has some exciting news, its Single Vineyard Ihumātao Auckland Chardonnay 2019 was named best Chardonnay by wine critic Bob Campbell MW from The Real Review in a blind tasting of the world’s finest.

Grown in the Ihumātao Vineyard in front of Villa Maria’s Auckland winery, it was joined by Villa Maria’s Single Vineyard Taylors Pass Marlborough Chardonnay and Single Vineyard Keltern Hawkes Bay Chardonnay in the ‘Great Chardonnays of the World’ flight.

Chief Winemaker, Nic Picone

Fifteen wines from across Burgundy, South Africa, Argentina, Chile, Australia and the United States of America were tasted blind in this one-of-a-kind tasting. All three Villa Maria wines excelled, but it was the Single Vineyard Ihumātao Auckland Chardonnay 2019 that was Bob Campbell MW’s top pick from this incredible line-up.

A proud moment flying the flag for New Zealand Chardonnay against some of the finest examples in the world.

“A concentrated chardonnay with grapefruit, tree fruits and oyster-shell characters. Very pure and defined. A seductive wine that has the X-factor. Wonderfully textural,” noted Campbell.
