Meet the Owner: Ronit Shrestha, Kind Stranger

Ronit Shrestha and Roshan are proud owners of Kind Stranger, a cafe in the heart of Auckland city.

Shrestha ventured from the Himalayas of Nepal to New Zealand to study and graduated in hospitality management. Following his education, he spent over ten years working in cafes and restaurants, refining his skills.

During Shrestha’s journey to become an entrepreneur, he met Roshan, who shares a similar passion for the hospitality industry. With a background in working at similar establishments, Roshan also manages one of the biggest hospitality event companies in Auckland.

While a career in coffee was not Shrestha’s initial plan, he was very much attracted to the brewing environment and the aroma it presents. As he spent his first job in a small coffee shop, Shrestha found himself drawn to other baristas.

“I began to observe and learn from my coworkers and university peers, taking note of their techniques and adopting similar strategies.”

Soon enough Shrestha’s curiosity peaked and his passion for coffee followed.

Shrestha’s passion continued to lead him towards opening Kind Stranger, which is known for crafting unique coffee creations. Freshly roasted with ground beans from Flight Coffee. Alongside the hot coffees, is a number of cold brews, iced brewed teas, and a range of smoothies that are sure to tantalise customers' taste buds.

“We are also working out to bring out every day special lunch boxes, which will likely include a variety of specialty homemade sandwiches, pastries, and delicious sweets.”

A dream come true in itself, owning Kind Stranger has been an ongoing passion project for Shrestha. However, he believes that the most rewarding aspect is watching the interactions between customers. Seeing familiar faces or watching strangers come together over a cup of his coffee is incredibly rewarding.

Shrestha also noted the fulfillment of witnessing his staff grow and mature as colleagues and friends, both professionally and personally.

Finding importance in those around him, Shrestha is often found socialising with his friends. Though it isn’t just having fun or going out together, he values the importance of being there for those around him, whether that be building a house, moving things, and so on. Shrestha recognizes the importance of being there for your community.

Shrestha’s values are expressed in his coffees.

“In my opinion what makes a great cup of coffee is the love put towards, the quality ingredients, proper preparation, and the presentation.”
