Meet the Barista: Vanita Dayal, Betsy

Modern deli, Betsy feels right at home in easy-going Island Bay.

The local hotspot offers healthy, fresh, seasonal food and makes just about everything right there in-house. Making use of local suppliers, the eatery chooses organic and fair-trade products for its breakfasts, baking, salads, meals, desserts, snacks and coffee.

Vanita Dayal is a first-time barista at Betsy. She enjoys making hot cups of goodness and found a coffee career easy to get into.

To Dayal, great coffee starts with a great bean. At Betsy, the team uses coffee from Wellington roastery Mojo. Dayal’s favourite blend is Dr Mojo - Mojo’s medium roast, full-bodied signature blend. Dr Mojo is bright, bold and smooth and has notes of toffee and raisin, combined with a creamy body, and spice and cocoa finish. A perfect shot, finished off with some silky milk makes the perfect cup. Dayal’s personal coffee order is a “not too hot” latte.

The barista has seen a rise in the popularity of plant-based milk, with oat milk currently the most requested milk alternative at Betsy. The deli also offers soy, almond and coconut milk as options.

Friendly to vegetarians, vegans and meat-eaters alike, Betsy offers an eat-in menu and fresh cabinet food available to take away. Comfort food like lasagnes, nachos, cottage pies and enchiladas are all on offer and can be picked up cold from the deli to reheat at home.

The deli also stocks some Wellington-made favourites such as products by Six Barrel Soda, KB Kombucha and Totara Cottage biscuits alongside other New Zealand food goodies like Forty Thieves nut butter and Sabato pasta sauces.

Open Tuesday-Sunday, the joyful deli is a community hit!
