Living Wage to Increase

Living Wage

New Zealand's Living Wage is set to increase to NZD 29.90 an hour, and is due to come into effect in September this year.

The new Living Wage rate of NZD 29.90 per hour has been announced, with Living Wage Employers having until 1 September 2026 to implement the increase.

The Living Wage exists as an alternative to the minimum wage, providing a rate that takes into account the cost for a worker and their family to not only survive, but to live a life with dignity.

This rate is calculated independently of the Living Wage Movement by the Family Centre Social Policy Unit.

Many employers, including over 340 Living Wage Employers across the country, already pay the Living Wage. This includes contracted workers in the state sector, local and regional government (including Auckland Council), the banking sector, and a range of small and large businesses.

“Workers in Aotearoa will be celebrating the announcement of the new Living Wage rate today,” said Muriel Tunoho, Chairperson of Living Wage Movement Aotearoa New Zealand.

“This is also a time of celebration for the Living Wage Movement, which continues to make a real difference in people’s lives.”

“Right now, in a cost-of-living crisis that seems to be getting worse every day, the Living Wage is needed more than ever. With these new fuel spikes, low-paid workers are struggling to keep their heads above water and to cover the absolute basics like rent, power, and kai. The Living Wage offers real hope and relief to workers and their whānau.”

Tunoho added that the Living Wage has supported New Zealanders through difficult economic conditions, and the current economy is no different.

“Our movement thanks Living Wage Employers who, time and again, ensure the wellbeing of their lowest-paid workers. By guaranteeing at least the Living Wage, they give workers confidence in these uncertain economic times.”
