100,000 litres of Gewürztraminer is awaiting sale following Vinoptima going into receivership. Receiver Andrew McKay said that it was more than he was expecting, and is hoping to get a decent price – despite never having had to sell so much wine before.
“It's only worth what someone is prepared to pay for it,” he said. “I don't know what we'll get. The only way is to test the market and I'm talking to lots of people.”
The property is set to be sold on December 4, and the wine could be sold simultaneously.
The lake is estimated to have a shelf value of over $9 million, with the equivalent of 133,000 bottles of Vinoptima’s premium Gewürztraminer which sells for $75 a bottle. However the market was mainly overseas, and receivers could struggle to get any better price than $4.50 a litre, according to industry experts. The total yield of $350,000 would be well less that what the winery could have achieved if it had remained operational and sold the wine into an overseas market.
