Canadian filmmaker James Cameron has spoken of his desire for New Zealand to become a meatless society.
The Oscar-winning director, who lives in Wairarapa and Malibu, California, told TVNZ’s Sunday programme that “New Zealand isn’t living up to its image of itself,” adding, “there’s a lot of work to do here to steward the land properly.”
Cameron has been vegan since 2012, along with his wife Suzy Amis. He recently announced a joint business venture with Kiwi director Peter Jackson. The two filmmakers hope to develop plant-based food options to encourage Kiwis to lower or drop their meat intake entirely.
“Getting your protein from meat requires anywhere from 10 to 40 times as much land as getting the same exact nutritional value from plants. What we need is a nice transition to a meatless or relatively meatless world in 20 or 30 years.”
