Happy Hour | Manhattan

The city of New York can be associated with so many different parts of pop culture, be it the famous skyline, the Statue of Liberty, shopping, or Broadway. But a piece of New York that you can obtain in any city around the world is, of course, the Manhattan.

No, not the city, but instead the cocktail. A Manhattan is made from a bourbon or rye whiskey, mixed with sweet vermouth and a dash of aromatic bitters.

The classic deep colour is recognisable everywhere, and has been a bar staple since it was invented over one hundred years ago.

Believed to have been first introduced in the late 1800s, the Manhattan is still one of the most popular tipples in today’s society. The subtle bitterness and herbal undertones create a beverage that is almost irresistible for whiskey lovers. Providing that an 80-proof whiskey is used as a base for the cocktail, a Manhattan can be around 30 percent above alcohol volume.

Whilst some prefer their Manhattan to be shaken, it is advised not to for it can create a cloudy like texture. Keeping the drink as clear as possible is a must for this liquor-forward cocktail, and to be garnished with its signature cherry or lemon peel.
