Drive Social Media Engagement & Community Support

The Restaurant Association's recent survey highlights the significant challenges facing the hospitality industry, with businesses grappling with declining revenues due to reduced customer numbers. However, there are proactive steps you can take to keep your restaurant or café afloat and even thrive during these tough times.

First and foremost, leverage social media to engage with your local community. Drive campaigns that highlight your unique offerings, special promotions, and events. Encourage your loyal customers to share their experiences and spread the word. A robust social media presence can significantly boost your visibility, attract new customers, and retain existing ones.

Social media is not just for advertising. Share behind-the-scenes stories, celebrate milestones, and engage directly with your customers. Respond to their comments, listen to their feedback, and make them feel valued. Building a loyal customer base will help sustain your business through tough times.

Maintaining clear and consistent opening hours is also crucial. Inconsistent hours can deter customers who want to know they can rely on your business being open. Ensuring your doors are open when you say they will be builds trust and reliability, which leads to repeat business.

The Restaurant Association survey revealed that 78 percent of Auckland businesses and 76 percent of businesses nationwide report worse or significantly worse revenue than last year. Additionally, 58 percent of Auckland businesses and 52 percent of businesses nationwide cite managing the customer downturn as their single biggest issue. These numbers highlight the importance of taking action.

Despite the challenging times, there is still optimism among industry members. Marisa Bidois, CEO of the Restaurant Association, emphasised the importance of community support.

"Many of these establishments serve as cornerstones of our community, hosting countless special occasions and launching the careers of many in our industry," she said.

"These closures serve as stark reminders of the challenges currently confronting the hospitality sector.

"To other businesses facing similar struggles, please know you are not alone. The Restaurant Association is here to support you. Reach out to us if you need assistance or just someone to talk to. Together, we can navigate these challenging times and look forward to a brighter future."

Other business owners also play a crucial role in supporting local hospitality businesses. Dining out, ordering takeout, or even just stopping by for a coffee can make a significant difference. Every bit of support helps keep the industry alive.

By taking proactive steps, leveraging social media, and maintaining consistent hours, you can enhance your business's resilience and ensure it remains a valued part of your community.

Together, we can navigate these tough times and emerge stronger.
