After intense demand from fans, KFC has announced its legendary cult-favourite Double Down will make a return, this time with a new Korean BBQ alternative to compliment the KFC Original Double Down.
The two Double Downs will be available to customers of KFC stores nationwide from Tuesday, May 21.
The Original Double Down is made by stacking two Secret Recipe Fillets, bacon, cheese and the Colonel’s Special Sauce. The Korean BBQ Double Down features two Zinger Fillets, bacon, cheese, and Korean BBQ sauce. Double Down has remained one of the most popular limited-edition menu items since it first appeared in New Zealand in 2011.
The concept of a “bunless burger” has led to queues of long-awaiting fans, who lined up before stores opened to try it, resulting in product shortages across the country at the time.
Since then, KFC has trialled variations including Bacon Lovers, Zinger Supercharged and Hot Honey, but this time, KFC has embraced the international popularity of Korean cuisine, especially Korean Barbeque.
KFC General Manager, Clark Wilson said the return of the double down has been a long time in the making, and the effort of many.
“Our food teams have been working hard to perfect this latest offering. We’ve developed a delicious ‘Swicy’ sauce, a blend between sweet and spicy, taking inspiration from Korean cuisine to offer a refined balance of flavours,” said Wilson.
“This flavour profile, combined with the crispy coating and heat of Zinger, is something we think Kiwis will love.”
When considering the popularity of the original burger, Wilson said that only time will tell as to whether the new offering will prove more popular than the original.
The KFC Original Double Down and KFC Korean BBQ Double Down, valued at $12.99, are available in-store for a limited time. Prices vary on delivery.
