International restaurant chain BurgerFuel, has implemented a global policy to use only cage-free eggs and egg ingredients.
Founded in Auckland, BurgerFuel has specialised in gourmet burgers since 1995, operating over 70 locations across New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. Recently, the company phased in the cage-free egg policy in New Zealand.
The company said in a statement that it is committed to using only cage-free eggs in all markets it operates in.
"When cage-free eggs cannot be guaranteed, we remove those burgers containing eggs from the menu. In this way, BurgerFuel customers can be reassured that only burgers containing cage-free eggs will be made available," said a spokesperson for Burgerfuel.
Corporate Engagement Manager at NGO Lever Foundation, Kirsty Tuxford, said that BurgerFuel should be applauded for its expanded global cage-free egg policy, which will greatly benefit egg-laying hens in the company’s supply chain. NGO Lever Foundation has worked with BurgerFuel with organising its commitment.
"By committing to cage-free egg sourcing BurgerFuel is both improving the lives of animals and meeting the growing global consumer demand for higher-welfare food products,” said Tuxford.
By taking this stance, Burger Fuel has joined a growing list of restaurants and QSR chains that have adopted a set timeline to source only cage-free eggs globally. Some of the other companies include Burger King, Dunkin, KFC, and Taco Bell.
