Popular West Auckland eatery, Bricklane Restaurant, will close its gaming lounge following disorderly behaviour from customers.
The Portage Licensing Trust (PLT) has instructed its management company, West Auckland Trust Services (WATS), to close the gaming lounge at Bricklane Restaurant in New Lynn. While gaming has historically been part of Bricklane and contributed to PLT’s community funding through TTCF gaming proceeds, this decision reflects a shift in priorities, placing the well-being of staff and patrons, and the future direction of hospitality at the forefront.
“While we acknowledge the financial cost of this decision, the gaming lounge has increasingly attracted conduct that makes it harder to maintain the safe, inclusive hospitality experience we’re committed to at Bricklane,” said Marcus Amosa, President of the Portage Licensing Trust.
“The type of hospitality experience we want to offer here is safe, welcoming, and family-friendly, and that has to come first.”
Bricklane is a popular restaurant with a growing reputation as a local gathering place that offers good, affordable food in a family-friendly atmosphere. The presence of gaming facilities has increasingly been at odds with that identity and with the venue’s vision for the future. “We’re focused on making our venues reflect the values of the communities they serve,” Amosa added.
“While gaming has provided funding for community initiatives, the safety and well-being of our people and our patrons outweigh any financial return.”
The decision is also consistent with PLT’s long-standing support for the sinking lid policy on gambling, which aims to reduce the number of pokie machines in the community over time. As opportunities arise, PLT remains committed to phasing out gaming in a responsible and community-conscious manner.
The closure of the small gaming room will enhance Bricklane’s atmosphere, creating a safer, more welcoming environment that will reflect PLT’s vision for high-quality, family-friendly hospitality.
