Wendy’s To Trial Plant-Based Pilot in Three U.S Markets

The Ohio-based burger brand has been developing a new plant-based Spicy Black Bean Burger for the past year and a half and is ready to trial it in three markets in the United States.

“We haven’t rushed to introduce anything,” noted Wendy’s vice president of culinary innovation, John Li. “Meatless doesn’t have to equal flavourless.”

The test patty includes black beans, chickpeas, brown rice, carrots, corn, and green and red capsicum. Spices include paprika and chipotle pepper.

“Beyond the patty, we wanted to really focus on having some structure and flavour contrast,” explained Eryn Bennett, Wendy’s manager of culinary and product innovation.

The Spicy Black Bean Burger will be on Wendy’s ‘Made to Crave’ menu which was launched in 2019.
