Under the backdrop of the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge, and located in the heart of The Rocks, The Mercantile has officially opened following a year-long renovation.

Sydney’s oldest Irish Pub, The Mercantile, first opened in 1915 and has built a reputation for its live music offerings and its quintessential hospitality. Its latest renovation has merged over a century’s worth of heritage with a refreshed look and new elevated offering.

The rooftop has introduced a new cocktail list, wine selection and a rotation of beers on tap. Its menu will continue to serve classic Irish dishes, as well as a refined menu to launch the bar’s new chapter.

A full refurbishment of the bar’s interior has honoured the traditional look of an Irish pub, mixed with a contemporary look.

The Mercantile closed its doors for the major renovation and upgrade in October 2024. In the meantime, the spirit of The Mercantile lived on at nearby 4 Doors Down, just four doors away, where patrons could still enjoy classic meals, drinks and live music. 4 Doors Down will continue to operate despite the reopening of The Mercantile, and has expanded its offerings to include coffee and a new breakfast service.

The building was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register in 2002, which recognised its architectural and cultural significance in Sydney’s history.

The Mercantile said it was confident that it struck a nice balance following the renovation, and that while the rooftop bar was a game-changer, the Irish heart and soul hadn’t changed.

The bar has long been synonymous with locals and tourists to the city, especially for its sweeping views over Sydney Harbour. Located near landmarks such as Circular Quay and the Sydney Opera House, The Mercantile has more than cemented its standing as an institution in Sydney’s hospitality landscape.
