Fans of Netflix’s sci-fi hit Stranger Things can chow down on Demogorgon pasta and Eleven’s first American hamburger, while rocking out to retro tunes at a new pop-up café inspired by the supernatural drama.
In a Netflix partnership with local restaurant chain Pronto Corp, the Stranger Pronto café is situated in the fashionable Shibuya district of Tokyo, Japan. Stranger Things has remained one of Netflix’s top 10 shows in Japan since the release of its fourth season in May.
Originally, the café collaboration was scheduled to run until September 4, but due to popular demand it is now scheduled to be open right through December.
The café interior resembles the fictional US town of Hawkins, Indiana with replicas of shops and sets from the show and a dark-mirror underworld that the pre-teen protagonists call the ‘Upside Down’.
Stranger Pronto offers a series of photo opportunities featuring backdrops like the road to Hawkins, the Byers house and a ‘trick art’ photo booth with a Demogorgon ready to attack.
Stranger Pronto’s menu is modelled on classic American diner dishes seen on the show. Diners can nosh on 13 limited-time dishes including protagonist El’s favourite waffles and an ice cream sundae inspired by character Dustin’s love of chocolate. In the unconventional Demogorgon Pasta, roast beef slices are arranged to look like the monster’s head.
In an effort to reduce the risk of spreading Covid-19, a visit to the café requires a reservation and only around 20 patrons are allowed inside every hour. Bookings are hard to come by with the small number of people admitted at once, and the major popularity of Tokyo’s long tradition of themed restaurants and cafes.
Stranger Pronto is open daily from 10am to 10pm.
