Skills Group has welcomed the Government’s announcement of nine new industry-led secondary school subjects, which will give young people clearer connections between the classroom, higher education and future employment.
Skills Group CEO Rosanne Graham said that closer collaboration between schools, tertiary providers and industry was essential to ensuring learners develop relevant, practical skills and understand the breadth of opportunities available to them.
“Giving these subjects parity with traditional academic subjects also sends an important signal that vocational and applied learning are highly valued pathways to successful careers,” she said.
“These nine subjects have the potential to replace a fragmented approach with clear, recognised pathways into further training and employment. Every learner will benefit from seeing how their education connects with real career opportunities.”
The Skills Group saw first-hand how practical, industry-relevant education can give learners the confidence and capability to progress into employment or further training.
Introducing these pathways at secondary school will help young people see where their learning can take them and make informed decisions about their futures.
Grahama added that the success of this initiative will depend on meaningful industry involvement and strong partnerships with tertiary providers. In many cases, those providers will deliver training to schools, creating effective pathways from school to workplace training and tertiary education.
The Skills Group looked forward to contributing its industry and training expertise as the new subjects are developed ahead of their introduction in 2029.
