A range of future-focused, industry-led secondary school subjects will give young New Zealanders more opportunities to connect what they learn at school with the jobs, training, and careers of the future.
Hospitality New Zealand (Hospitality NZ) said the introduction of nine new industry-led subjects into the National Curriculum for Years 12-13 will help strengthen pathways from secondary school into vocational careers.
Of the subjects announced, Hospitality, Food and Beverage and Tourism are of particular relevance to the hospitality and accommodation sector.
“Hospitality relies on vocational training. We are pleased to see that the Government has strengthened pathways into hospitality from secondary school, and that the hospitality industry will have input into the development of these subjects," said Hospitality NZ Chief Executive Kristy Phillips.
“We have long advocated for clear and consistent career pathways being demonstrated from secondary school into the sector."
Phillips said these courses will provide students with an opportunity to develop their skills and knowledge, understand the careers the sector has to offer, and support their pathways into further study, training, or apprenticeships.
From an industry perspective, she added, it will also ensure the curriculum reflects the real-world skills needed to bring new talent through the industry.
“We look forward to working closely with the Services Industry Skills Board on the development of these subjects.”
Economic Growth Minister Nicola Willis said a growing economy means real opportunities for young New Zealanders, with good jobs, higher wages, and a future worth building here.
