New Zealand is set to receive its first adoptable dog café, The Barkery, in Christchurch. Opening next year, the café will be a place where people can interact with rescue dogs over a cup of coffee, with the opportunity to adopt. They are also invited to bring their own dogs in so that they can also interact with the rescue dogs.
The Barkery is aiming to increase the adoption rates of rescue dogs in New Zealand, where only 12 percent of our pet dogs are adopted from shelters and rescue organisations.
Over summer, the café will not have a permanent home but will host a series of ‘pup-up’ events where people can get a feel for the idea.
