When her parents opened their first café in 2018, Evie Bunce wouldn’t have believed that five years later she would be both Head Barista and Café Manager in their second venue.
Bunce started training as a vet nurse after high school but quickly realised she couldn’t see herself doing the job long term. As the family business began to grow, Bunce found herself along for the ride, dedicating herself to learning both more about coffee and the behind the scenes of managing a small business.
“I love to see people enjoy something that I have prepared for them,” said Bunce. “For a lot of people a coffee is the kick start to their morning, and what sets them up for the day. I love being able to provide that for so many faces, while also bringing them some positive energy and a smile.”
Get Fixed Bicycle Café strives to be a place where everyone feels welcome. The food offering includes a variety of bagels, salads and burgers using locally sourced organic greens with options to suit a range of dietary requirements.
The café also makes sure to put the planet first, they don’t offer single use takeaway cups and have a Bioloo compostable toilet on site. The food waste from both cafés is used to feed the family chickens and the business absorbs the cost of paying to recycle plastics, cardboard and glass as opposed to sending it all to landfill.
The bicycle workshop attached to the café allows the business to give back to the local community. They frequently work with Activation Upper Hutt to restore donated bikes and pass them on to deserving recipients.
Bunce recognises the importance of a premium bean as the first step in the creation of a perfect cup of coffee, followed by the perfect grind and extraction.
“There is definitely a science behind making a good cup of coffee,” Bunce explained. “It's all about the finer details.”
