Meet the Barista: Barbara Griffin, Provisions

Barbara Griffin is Café Manager and Head Barista at Provisions Café of Arrowtown.

Griffin trained as a chef, and worked in hotels in Queenstown before moving to Wellington to run a café with her sister and brother in law. Dabbling in hospitality between having children, Griffin took the job as Café Manager at Provisions when owner Jane first opened doors of the restored historic Romans cottage in 2010. She has loved being there in the twelve years since.

“I love being front of house, interacting with customers and making coffee.”

Finding the most reward in happy customers, Griffin and her team ensure a great experience serving the best food and coffee.

“We’re very lucky to have a great team at Provisions. All our baristas are very passionate about making great coffee.”

Provisions of Arrowtown is all about fresh modern food and offers a daily blackboard menu alongside great tasting counter food. All food is made on site with breads, bagels and pastries baked daily. The café works with Allpress Coffee.

“I think New Zealanders have finally caught up with the rest of the world, becoming more aware about drinking the best coffee. We’ve become quite the coffee connoisseur’s.”

Griffin uses the Allpress Espresso blend, which is sweet, balanced and complex, offering a nice strong brew to every coffee made.

“Allpress has a reputation for attracting people as they know the base of the coffee is always there.”

To Griffin, making coffee is a craft as well as a science and the Provisions team strives to make every cup to absolute perfection.

Griffin has found the introduction of plant-based milks and alternatives an outstanding enhancement to coffee making.

“It’s amazing how popular plant-based milks and alternatives have become with our customers!”

When not working, she enjoys a good book, walking, cooking and her personal go-to coffee - a single shot long black with a little hot oat milk.
