The former site of SPQR has been given a new name, Jacuzzi, which is set to open its doors come January.

Since its closure in July, there has been much speculation about the future of what was legendary Auckland restaurant SPQR. New owners of the site, sisters Bronwyn and Jessica Payne, have revealed the restaurant’s new name, Jacuzzi. The announcement was made on social media. The new restaurant follows SPQR's 32 years of operation in the location.

The restaurant has been described as a rare opportunity for the local hospitality industry that will artfully infuse a range of inspirations from SPQR’s vibrant past, the character of the Ponsonby area, European travels and a touch of disco glamour.

“Jacuzzi is a feast for the senses, with a high-end drink and food offering,” a statement on social media said.

Jacuzzi is also on the hunt for staff with various types of experience, including a head chef, general manager, chefs, and bar staff. Its opening is expected to be in January 2025.

Bronwyn and Jessica Payne have been in business with each other for more than a decade, having opened a range of popular restaurants, bars and eateries, including Hoppers and Elmos. Jessica Payne opened her first restaurant, The Pizza Library in Mt Maunganui at age 20 in 2012. At that time, she was the sole owner.

The sisters said that taking over the former SPQR location gave it a new lease of life. Their ambition has been to bring sophistication, spontaneity and theatricality into new genres of inner-city escapism.

The pair have also been working on a few surprises that will be unveiled on opening day. One secret that can be shared is that the infamous copper bar that often became a dancefloor for many guests will remain in place.
