New Zealand's micro distilleries, specifically those based in the Coromandel, are making a splash on the global gin stage.

In a remarkable shift in the world of gin, New Zealand micro distilleries are capturing recognition and accolades, proving their prowess on the global stage. The results of the 2026 International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC) have revealed that the country’s craft spirits are not only competing, but excelling, amongst some of the world's most esteemed gin producers.

The IWSC is one of the world’s oldest and most respected competitions, often referred to as the “Olympics of the drinks industry.” Each year, the IWSC evaluates over 12,000 entries from more than 90 countries. With 90 percent of the judges being active buyers and industry leaders, an IWSC medal isn’t merely a participation trophy; it's recognition by the people who shape markets and set global trends. This year, two gins from New Zealand brought home Gold Outstanding medals, solidifying the nation’s burgeoning reputation in the spirits industry. A Gold Outstanding award at the IWSC is comparable to earning a Michelin star in the culinary world; it represents the highest level of achievement and excellence.

Among the distinguished winners, Clarity Distilling Company garnered an impressive 99 points for their Navy Gin, earning the title of the highest-scoring gin in the competition. Close behind, Coromandel Distilling Company's aged Awildian Coromandel Mānuka Gin received a remarkable 98 points, showcasing the distinct flavours of New Zealand's native ingredients and exemplifying the extraordinary talent within our local distilleries.

Founded in 1969, the IWSC is renowned for its rigorous judging process. This year’s results illustrate a shifting global landscape for gin, with traditional styles gaining prominence and reflecting a diverse geographical spread: winners hailed from countries including Laos, Taiwan, Saskatchewan, and rural Japan, while the United Kingdom, historically known as gin's spiritual home, saw only one finalist.

Paul Schneider and Daniela Suess, co-owners of Coromandel Distilling Company, have cultivated their passion for gin-making in Thames, collecting over 40 prestigious awards since their inception in 2019.

"New Zealand has emerged as a powerhouse in the global gin scene, not just for the quality of our products but also for our commitment to the land from which they come," said Schneider.

"Our success reflects a love for craftsmanship, the wilderness and the adventurous spirit of our distillation journey. We are incredibly proud to represent New Zealand on the world stage.”

As New Zealand micro distilleries continue to gain recognition, the global gin landscape is undoubtedly changing, with an increasing appreciation for the artisan craftsmanship and unique flavours that our nation has to offer.
