Consumer NZ Launches Campaign Against Misleading Supermarket Specials

Consumer NZ have begun a campaign against "dodgy specials" in supermarkets.

According to the consumer advocacy group, although the Commerce Commission has outlined that supermarkets must ensure that their pricing is simple to understand, it continues to receive complaints about misleading supermarket specials and promotions regularly.

Consumer NZ's Gemma Rasmussen stated that "supermarkets understand the persuasiveness of a 'special' or 'everyday low' price. Recent Consumer NZ polling found that only 5 percent of respondents don't bother with specials."

In conjunction to misleading promotional deals, Consumer NZ added that some shoppers have complained to the group that when they cross-checked their supermarket receipts, they have often been charged more than the price advertised.

Consumer NZ are calling on the help of consumers to email in examples of misleading and unclear pricing to "hold the supermarkets to account."

They assert that shoppers should be able to confidently purchase a product on special and know that they are getting a good deal.

"It's important that the supermarkets are honest with shoppers about their pricing."
