Best Vegan Sausages Revealed

The Vegan Sausage Awards have again highlighted the best on the local market, adding the plant-based category this year. This year was the fifth year the awards have taken place.

Sausage makers and alternative delicatessens from around the country entered the competition and were judged by executive chef and trainer Jasbir "Jazz" Kaur, and Plabita Florence, owner and chef of Forest, judged this year's entrants. Celebrity judge and comedian, Tom Sainsbury, was also on hand during the evening. Sainsbury said that he had done a lot of research on what to look for in the perfect vegan sausage.

"I may not be the best at describing umami and sausage casings, but I'm very excited to be giving my opinion," said Sainsbury, before the judging.

The supreme winner was Plan*t, for the second year running. The spicy chorizo was praised by the judges who said that it had a suitable casing, with a crispy outside and soft inside.

Vegan Society spokesperson, Claire Insley, said that vegan sausages are here to stay; they are healthier and better for the environment, and are a more compassionate way of eating.

"With over 8 billion people and rising, the move towards a plant-based economy is ever more pressing. Plant-based sausages are a fun and easy way to look after our planet and our health," said Insley.

The Vegan Society supports and facilitates a vegan lifestyle and plant-based eating by creating a vibrant, visible and influential community, and by providing resources and information.
