SETTLING THE DISPUTE

The Employment Relations Authority has awarded the wife of a former restaurateur $24,000 for lost wages, contractual damage and holiday pay.

After closing in March of 2018, Maria Varela applied for compensation after her husband’s restaurant Alfonso Restaurants Limited closed down. Alfonso Mayorga had established the business in 2014, and Varela had been employed there since 2015.

After running into financial difficulties, Valera felt cheated out of money following ongoing disputes with her husband and failed attempts to turn the business around.

Valera was later rewarded around $24,000 for lost wages, unpaid holiday pay, and a two-month notice period.
