Top Tipple: Pina Colada

No resort holiday would be complete without the tropical sensation that is a pina colada.

Traditionally made with white rum, a common substitute in a pina colada is vodka. Since vodka has a relatively less sweet taste than rum, it is suggested to add an extra element to create the classic taste. Pineapple juice is a great addition to vodka in a pina colada.

Originating in Puerto Rico, the famous tropical cocktail is complete with a sweet mix of coconut cream and fruity flavours, and has been a fan favourite for generations. Said to have been intended sometime in the 1950s, the exact inventor is still disputed, but some argue it was Ramón “Monchito” Marrero at the Caribe Hilton hotel.

It was reported that last year the pina colada was considered to be the ninth most popular cocktail in the United States, a substantial increase from the 17th position it held the year prior.

The pina colada is often considered to be a drink consumed on holiday, topped off with the signature pineapple slice and cherry.
