The humble cheese toastie, a staple of the Kiwi diet for many a generation, is about to be celebrated in all its forms during the inaugural Great New Zealand Toastie Tour.

A collaboration between McClure’s Pickles and Coffee Supreme, the Great New Zealand Toastie Tour runs for the month of August and sees more than 20 cafes and food outlets around the country serving up their own unique take on the perfect toastie.

Wellington’s Baker Gramercy has created a cheese toastie featuring gruyere, stout-braised onions, béchamel sauce and pickles on kumara thyme sourdough, while Auckland’s Federal Delicatessen has opted for a toastie of ‘Fed’ curds, gruyere, Swiss cheese and pickles.

Christchurch’s Terra Viva Café has gone for a meatier option with their delicious roast duck and pickle toastie, while Supreme Supreme has created a savoury mince toastie on their menu, featuring smoked cheese and pickles.

Meanwhile, those who follow a vegan diet can head to Vondel in Auckland’s Devonport, where a toastie filled with pickles, plant-based cream cheese and cheddar cheese, and a house-made vegan pastrami is set to delight taste buds.
