Ponsonby restaurant suffers meltdown

Auckland eatery Mr Toms suffered a “kitchen meltdown” on Sunday, causing some diners to leave the restaurant without paying after waiting up to 90 minutes for their meals to arrive. The Ponsonby restaurant had promised a “midday feast with bottomless vino." The weekend $50 deal entitles diners to a two-course meal accompanied by all-you-can-drink glasses of Prosecco, Mimosa, Estrella Damm, or a mocktail.

One anonymous diner told Stuff, “The waiter was topping us up all the time,” but food was nowhere to be seen. “Eventually, another waiter came over and said, ‘Look, I’m really sorry to tell you this, we can’t serve you any food at all because the chefs have had a big fight and walked out.’”

A spokesperson for Mr Toms said a “last-minute illness” was to blame, not a fight. The venue closed for two days to allow staff to recover.
