AUSTRALIA | One of the most controversial culinary topics has been tackled head-on: Does pineapple belong on pizza: Yes or No?
Domino’s Australia has demanded that the nation’s prospective leaders and voters alike come clean on a very juicy issue ahead of this weekend’s Federal Election. Pineapple on pizza: YES, or NO?
In a world that currently makes no sense, Domino’s said being asked to declare allegiance to a tropical fruit, or not, actually made perfect sense when it came to determining the future of Australia.
“If you are what you eat, then this really could be a deciding factor for voters,” a Domino’s spokesperson said.
Opponents say fruit simply does not belong on pizza, while pineapple promoters insist the citrusy zing enhances the overall pizza experience.
To help shamelessly stir understanding of the depth of feeling on this issue, Domino’s set up a Pineapple Voting Booth (aka the Pineap-POLL) in Brisbane’s King George Square on Monday, 28 April.
A Big Election Analyst said that pineapple on pizza sparks passionate opinions every time, much like the nation’s preference on the ballot paper. But a person’s pineapple-on-pizza preference was seen as a genuine window into the soul, and could definitely influence their vote.
“Not since Tony Abbott ate a raw onion have people cared so much about what a Prime Minister puts in their mouth,” he said.
“You can tell this is a core issue for Australians by the way they’re avoiding the real party volunteers and their handouts to get to the Pineapple Voting Booth. They want to make their voices heard. Or maybe they think there might be free pizza in there – the modelling isn’t clear.”
If pineapple claims victory, Domino’s will sweeten the deal by making pineapple toppings free for one day only.
But if the nation votes no, in a bold (and slightly heartbreaking) move, Domino’s will remove pineapple from its menu for the day.
Domino’s Australia said it reserved the right to backflip on any sweeping promises it makes to reward customers for voting in the Pineap-POLL, but there’s a good chance it will involve pizza.
