OPTICAL ILLUSION DRAWING CAFÉ

South Korea’s popular Yeonnam-dong district in Seoul has a café that is causing a stir on the internet for its sketch-book-like aesthetic – everything looks like its come straight out of a black-and-white comic book. From the floors, walls and tables to the cutlery, the ‘drawing café’ is a 2D-looking dreamscape, transporting customers to life in a cartoon. Popular on Instagram the café also has a range of colourful food and beverages on their menu which look beautifully photogenic against the monochromatic backdrop of the café.

Since the café’s opening, it has become a recommended attraction for both locals and tourists. The interior is white, with each object and detail outlined in black, offering an optical illusion of a pen-and-paper drawn world. The furniture fits in with this theme and blends well with the sketch-inspired wall art.

“It’s been successful because our customers all take pictures. We became famous very naturally,” said JS Lee, marketing manager for the YND 239-20 café.
