NO SHORTCUTS

Award-winning handmade gourmet chutney company No Shortcuts was Highly Commended at the 2014 NZ Farmers Market Awards. Owner Mary Brons chatted with the team about continuing to grow the business, with the next step being entering supermarkets and hopefully exporting one day.

What is your company background, how did you start the business?

“Our products are 100 percent preservative, chemical and additive free and come with a full money back guarantee. Our new product, Feijoa & Ginger jam, is delightful. Half the range is non-gluten.”

What are the current product range and variants and how do these products stand out in the market?

“The product range includes Tamarillo Chutney, Thai Tomato, Sambal Ulek, Mustard Pickle, Beetroot Relish, Gherkin Relish, and Feijoa & Ginger Jam.

The Tamarillo Chutney is fabulous with roast pork or chicken, cheeses, extra special with brie, or added to meatballs and casseroles, cold meats, sandwiches, pizzas and antipasto platters. The Thai Tomato can be spread on a pizza base, mixed through pasta, antipasto platters, chicken marinades, or with mayonnaise as a potato salad dressing. Sambal Ulek is great anywhere you would use chilli; in a stir fry, with prawns and noodles, in a peanut sauce, curried mince, casseroles and meatballs. Try it with Vogel’s and cream cheese or in soup with fish stock, vegetables, noodles and fish. The Mustard Pickle is great with strong cheeses, salty meats such as ham and corned beef, sausages and mash and tasty on sandwiches. The Beetroot Relish can be served with five-grain toast, avocado, beetroot relish and egg, on hamburgers or with sour cream/cream Fraiche as a dip. It is great with roast beef and cheese sandwiches or used as a marinade on a pork fillet.

The Gherkin Relish can be used on sandwiches, antipasto platters, cheeses and cold meats, with mayo as a dressing or sour cream as a dip, and great with fish or pasta/potato salad.

The Feijoa & Ginger Jam is sensational on toast, with cream cheese on bagels, cheeses, especially blue cheese, and added to marinades. It is a great topping on cheesecakes, ice cream or yoghurt.”

“We were Highly Commended at the 2014 NZ Farmers Market Awards and in the Top 54 at the 2015 NZ Farmers Market Awards.”

What are the plans for the business moving forward, is there any expansion on the horizon?

“We have product testers of gherkins however these have not been brought to market as yet.”
