Meet The Distiller | Glen Cadwallader, Waiheke Distilling Co.

Distilling was always on the cards for Glen Cadwallader.

Making bespoke spirits has been a family passion for almost half a century, providing an enriching experience for Cadwallader that later impacted his career choice.

He initially went into engineering and spent his early years in electricity before moving to start his distillery. Later, Glen and his wife, Liz Scott, travelled overseas to explore craft distilleries' different methodologies, processes, and products.

With Scott's passion for botanicals and commercial experience through property development roles such as the Pacifica Tower as Head of Hengyi New Zealand, and Cadwallader's history, the duo made quite the team.

Starting Waiheke Distilling Co., the team are dedicated to creating clean, fresh, premium small-batch products that hero the local ingredients that thrive on the island.

"We harvest or forage as much of the botanicals as possible from the property, the island, or small New Zealand producers. Our focus is on quality, sustainability, provenance, and unique blends," said Cadwallader.

The award-winning botanical vodka range consists of Horopito Spice, Kawakawa Summer and Hibiscus Honey, all reflecting a unique taste while enjoyed neat.

Sustainability continues to be central to their processes, with botanicals from the distillation process used as compost and using every part of the fruit.

Recently launching a high-end artisan G&T RTD based on their signature gin, Spirit of Waiheke, this drink was a first for the island. It can also be found on both Fullers360 and Sealink.

"A great spirit needs to be approachable and as clean and natural as possible. A great spirit should be associated with life's best milestone moments."

Both Cadwallader and Scott find many rewarding aspects of the job, most notably the positive feedback from their customers, which never fail to make the pair feel fortunate in what they do.

Waiheke Distilling Co.'s products have reached international success, winning a Gold Medal and Best in Show by Country for their Horopito Spice Vodka and a Silver for their Kawakawa Summer Vodka at the 2023 London Spirits Competition. Expanding its product portfolio and collaborating with like-minded brands are future goals of the company.

Both Cadwallader and Scott shared their appreciation for their hardworking team of Waiheke locals and their loyal and growing customers and suppliers, making their job enjoyable.
