Meet The Brewer | Andrew Ranum, Browns Bay Brewing Co

Andrew Ranum was trained in Zoology and Wildlife Management before shifting his life towards the hospitality industry when he moved to the UK in the 90s.

Beginning his journey at McMullen & Sons, a family-owned brewery, Ranum quickly found an appreciation for English ales and began to brew his own.

On returning to New Zealand in 2012, Ranum moved around Auckland managing various craft beer venues, with an extensive stint at 8 Wired Brewing in Warkworth.

Ranum returned to Auckland, working at Deep Creek Brew Pub in Browns Bay before the new owners came in and committed to developing the brewing side of the business, in which The Browns Bay Brewing Co was born.

Given Ranum's experience in the UK, many beers are reminiscent of the ales.

"Many of the beers we make have a solid malt character, reminding me of the English ale brew, with popular styles like pale ales and IPAs," said Ranum.

The beers have gained popularity and are sold at the brew bar and a collection of venues.

"Now that we are providing our beer at different venues, the brewing process has gotten more complicated and requires more time to facilitate the different flavours," said Ranum.

Encouraged by sustainable practices, Ranum and the team work alongside City To Farm, who provide a waste service ensuring the used grain is transported to local farms for compost and topsoil creation.

Alongside the taste of a finely balanced beer, Ranum thoroughly enjoys the feedback from customers who enjoy it and converse with him about their thoughts.

The Browns Bay Brewing Co team is seeking to upscale production and concentrate on finding ways to sell their products across the New Zealand market.
