Originally from Taiwan, Jessie Chen fondly remembers making coffee using a Moka pot and syphon at home with her mother whilst growing up. Until she moved to New Zealand, the idea of being a barista and knowing the ins and outs of an espresso machine was unimaginable, now it’s her daily reality.
Though the novelty of making coffee in New Zealand has slightly worn off, Chen has a true passion for creating delicious tasting coffees with beautiful latte art. During the beginning of her barista journey, Chen was drawn to the way experienced baristas could create a picture through the mixing of espresso and silky steamed milk and vowed to practise until she could do the same.
Chen finds watching the reactions customers have when they’re served her artful coffees to be very rewarding, especially when they take the time to speak to her about the latte art or extend their thanks for a great coffee.
Chen’s coffee of choice is an oat flat white and she believes a great coffee starts with the perfect espresso extraction.
