Maine bans polystyrene containers

Maine has become the first U.S. state to prohibit the sale and distribution of polystyrene foodservice containers. The statewide ban goes into effect on January 1st, 2020. In addition to Maine’s ban, the same sort of restrictive measures is being looked at in around ten other states.

According to the National Council of State Legislatures, previous attempts to ban polystyrene in Virginia and Connecticut have failed.

Although this is the first state to act, smaller towns and municipalities have already removed polystyrene.
